Community Centre
The Surrey Cricket Trust together with Reach has built a community centre in Werellana. Set on a 90 perch site, the building will provide recreational facilities and serve as a central location for families to meet and socialise. It will provide ample space for all the income generation activities to be housed under one roof.
Paul Sheldon Chief Executive of the Surrey Cricket Club visited Werellana on the 31st January 2006. He arrived to a traditional greeting by the income-generation group and was asked to officially inaugurate the visit by lighting the traditional lamp. Paul was truly impressed with the income generation classes and was presented with a garment sewn by one of the women.
Some of the land around the building will be converted into a multi-sports ground. It is expected that the ground will be used extensively, as the young men and children of the village play at least two hours of cricket and football a day.
It has been a difficult task fraught with setbacks such as finding affordable land to gaining the required build permissions, however we are finally there and the building is complete and ready for opening.
